Review

A tantalising tale of wolves, magic, and lost family secrets with a steamy second chance romance woven inside. There's a lot to keep track of - a lot of characters, particularly Blaise's numerous cousins, and multiple versions of a key historical event linking the families - but it is woven into a rich amd intriguing story. It can be a little dark and there's animal injury and death, but it's none of it gratuitous.

It's not your typical shifter romance - there's a lot more focus on Reina's journey of self-discovery and revelations about her own family, in part because everyone around her is under orders not to tell, as well as a distinct aura of threat from parties unknown (or are they!?). Still, her connection with Blaise is undeniable and inevitable, even if he comes across as a bit of an ass to start off. The short chapters from alternating points of view keep the action moving quickly so we can see he is fully aware when he sticks his foot into his mouth but simply can't help himself!

You can't go past how adorable Xavier is, nor the many dogs. I also loved that Reina's job as a vet actually came in handy and those scenes are written with confidence. The ending is satisfying but definitely leaves some doors open and threads dangling, though hopefully Reina and Blaise get some time together before the next danger arises!

Best enjoyed under the full moon for full effect - though Blaise would tell you it doesn't matter!

Review

The typical historical romance of knights and ladies is given a fresh twist by an unconventional heroine. I really loved that Jean is disabled - her sight is failing irreversibly - and yet she knows her own value enough to not care about the scorn of others. The downsides of going blind are not erased but she has learnt to use her other senses to understand the world around her. I did get impatient when she insisted on being included in everything - and yes, sometimes staying with the knight is safer than staying on her own, but given her vision, there are still things she simply shouldn’t or can’t do. On the other hand, she generally acknowledges her mistakes and apologises, so I can't get too mad.

The romance is natural and believable, because while lots of people assume they know what is best for Jean, particularly her loving brother and sister in law, and Warin quickly realised to treat her as a person and not an invalid. Their antagonistic relationship soon morphs into interest and friendship, even though Warin has vowed never to marry again. His gruff exterior hides a core of honour and a painful past.

There's an ongoing mystery that provides a sense of danger and forces Jean and Warin into proximity (mostly because Jean keeps turning up in the wrong places until Warin agrees to let her tag along), but in this instalment it's more of a plot device. Quick note: while this is first in a series, it features protagonists from a previous series, but they all stand alone with no spoilers needed or given.

Overall, this is a romance all about finding someone who can 'see' you as you truly are, and that's really all one can ask for!

Review

Life has not been kind to Garrick MacLean since he honourably proposed marriage to Lady Moira Fraser née Stewart and she turned him down because he was in love with her younger sister Brenna. Years later, loss has shattered him and turned him bitter and overbearing. He's returning north to lick his wounds, not to save the woman he almost married from her burnt out carriage.

Brenna is grateful for his aid in saving her life, but quite rightly calls him out on his new (and much unimproved) attitude. She's been papering over her heartbreak since Garrick was presumed dead and I loved seeing her realise her own worth. Garrick, meanwhile, is irritated to find that he still has feelings. He's helping Brenna out of a sense of duty, and not because he's still in love with her. Of course. I wanted him to buck out of his self-loathing a little earlier and give a little more grovel, but he gets there in the end.

This is an excellently written novel that really does make you hate the English of the time. The complex clan alliances are sketched in enough detail to give realism without being confusing, and it was fabulous to see Moira and Rory again. There's a mystery to solve and it all comes to a heady climax in the historical version of a car chase!

Best enjoyed with your feet planted firmly on the ground, this Scottish historical romance has just a hint of romantic suspense about it.

Review

Full of twists, turns, and incredibly entertaining coincidences, this book is a fun romp around the world following Sister Agatha as she perseveres in her quest to be the world's oldest person. It's short and light and a whole lot of fun, but will keep you guessing.

Sister Agatha is definitely the star of the show: full of determination and with more luck than a four-leaf clover, but perhaps a little less clever than she thinks. However, we get snippets of the people whose lives intersect with her adventures, from a Scottish momma's boy to a scheming blackmailer, with many of them reappearing in clever ways.

Deftly written, handling perspective shifts and flashbacks to keep the action moving, you almost don't realise how neatly everything ties together until the end! Suspend your disbelief and sit back to enjoy the ride.

Blog Bliz: Fantasy Short Stories by Suzanne Rogerson

A collection of stories featuring favourite characters from Visions of Zarua and ‘Silent Sea Chronicles’, plus a glimpse into the new series, ‘Starlight Prophecy’.

The Guardian
With an assassin picking off wizards one-by-one, Kalesh visits Cassima, a former student, hoping to persuade her to re-join the Royal Wizards and use their protection to keep her family safe.Kalesh’s newest charge, Paddren, has strange visions which link to a past event known only to a select few. The knowledge hidden in Paddren’s visions is invaluable so Kalesh must guard the boy at any cost.
Can Kalesh keep his students off the assassin’s radar long enough for his order to stop the killer?

Garrick the Protector
Fifteen-year-old Garrick is helping at his uncle’s farm when his cousin’s illegal use of magic threatens the family’s safety.
Mara is in immediate danger from the Assembly who deem all magic as a threat. The only safe place for her is the Turrak Mountains where exiled mystics have found sanctuary alongside the island’s Sentinel.
Can Garrick get Mara to safety before the Assembly catch up with them?

War Wounds

Finally released from duty, he travels home and encounters a mysterious woman who insists his life is destined to serve a higher purpose. Calder rejects her claims, wanting only to return to a simple existence with his wife.
But can Calder pick up his old life when the powers within him have been stirred? And why does he feel such misgivings about his return?

All three stories give readers a tantalising glimpse into the fantasy worlds created by Suzanne Rogerson.

Review

Though unrelated, these three stories each hark back to classic epic fantasy of swords and magic. They act as a prologue of sorts to a full length story - one novel, one trilogy, and one upcoming series, and all give a peek into these worlds without spoiling the plot or needing additional context. There's even an excerpt from the already-released books to pique further interest!

I found The Guardian bittersweet as it plays out like a foregone conclusion, as much as I and the characters hope otherwise. Garrick the Protector was probably my favourite, showcasing a teenager determined to be strong when the world turns on his family. War Wounds was the most complex, with the horror of war from both sides and a dollop of mystery and threat.

The stories draw you in and leave you wanting to know just a bit more about these characters and what happens next. If you're looking for some fantasy to jump into, these bite-sized stories will give you a good taste of something new - and if you've read these books already, these will give you some backstory of your favourite characters.

Review

This is a bittersweet angsty romance about emerging from the shadow of grief. Poor Lily has been happy enough pottering her widowhood away, but her brother offers her spare room to an old friend (cheeky!). Lily once had a thing for Jack but she's gotten very used to the safety of solitude.

I'd better set out a warning for the traumatic loss of a spouse and some suicidal ideation - despite the cheerful cover there's some heavy stuff in here. Lily starts the story as a successful recluse, having withdrawn to grieve. Her brother and sister-in-law have a bad habit of ignoring her boundaries and shoving her outside her comfort zone. Their love and care is touching but isn't the only way to support someone who is grieving - and Jack joins in almost as soon as he moves in. Fortunately, with their encouragement and support, Lily starts to face the world again.

I enjoyed the slowly growing friendship between Lily and Jack as they got to know one another again. Lily is witty and always ready to skewer Jack with a one-liner; Jack is ready to give as good as he gets and is more than able to stand his ground. I absolutely adored how his skills matched what Lily needed - and the restoration of her garden in line with the rebuilding of her life. Clive is, of course, adorable, as can only be expected of a golden retriever.

Best enjoyed in view of a garden - well tended or otherwise! If you're looking for a romance with a bit more emotional weight, come give this one a try.

Blog Tour: Scotsman in the Stacks by Alana Oxford

Paige wants two things: to land a full time librarian job and find the man of her dreams. On the cusp of thirty, she finds herself suddenly single and working part-time in a Michigan library. A handsome patron with a delicious accent appears at the reference desk, inadvertently sparking an idea that might help her land the promotion she so desperately needs. But that's not the only thing he sparks.

James is in town from Glasgow, Scotland, on a summer artist residency. Luckily, the trip got him away from the pressure he feels to take over his uncle's river tour business. He only wanted to clear his head and make his art in peace, but he wasn't counting on finding an attractive librarian to fill his days.

With only eight weeks before James goes home to Scotland, Paige knows she should protect her heart. After all, she already wasted years with her commitmentphobe ex. But the more she gets to know James, the less she can stick to her plan to just be friends. Is she just wasting her time again, or can they bridge the ocean between them to find a happily ever after of their own?

Review

I knew this was going to be a good read when Paige divulged one of librarians' deepest secrets: they don't care about due dates because their own accounts don't accrue late fees! It was this gem of knowledge (that I can 100% verify through my own experience) that exemplifies the authenticity that underlies this modern fairytale. I might not be the biggest fan of twenty-nine being treated as practically on the shelf, but it's fleeting, as the rest of this book is a wonderful dream of getting swept away by a handsome stranger, of summer romances and weekend roadtrips, of finding someone whose support encourages the best version of you, and with little details to give the entire story the ring of truth.

I loved Paige. Her knowledge of romance novels got a little meta, but it's about par for the course when sitting in the head of a librarian! Paige's character arc is subtle but empowering - she starts the novel sure of what she wants but almost unwilling to even voice it, but thanks to James she takes the initiative to take steps to where she wants to be. James is a little more enigmatic as we see him only through Paige's eyes, but we're given enough of his story to understand his background and the growth that Paige inspires. I'm glad the novel was written this way, as I feel James' story is more common in novels and thus easy to imagine.

Overall, this was an enjoyable closed-door romance combining two of my favourite things: libraries and trips away! Best enjoyed in a library (where else?) or surrounded by books, this engaging romance is the perfect blend of fantasy anchored by doses of wisdom and a deep love of Michigan.

Review

This is a delightful steamy romance with leads in their forties. The more I read, the more I grew invested in Sabrina and Michael. Their chemistry is off the charts and the only obstacles to a happy ending are themselves - but given their lives so far, it all makes sense and is resolved in a satisfying way. As romance goes, this is a good one.

As books that tackle grief go, this is an excellent one. Sabrina is too young to be widowed but too old to be swept off her feet (she thinks). Her support group are hilarious but also incredibly heartfelt; their observations and advice on grief feel so spot on and I was tearing up at parts - yet it was never maudlin or gratuitous, simply a woman living with grief and realising that her life didn't end when her husband's did. Her reluctance to jump into another relationship is understandable but beautifully handled. I hope the rest of her widows group find their own happy endings, with or without a new significant other.

Best enjoyed with a fluffy blanket and a couple of tissues, and maybe a cool drink ;)

Review

A historical second chance romance with plenty to enjoy, this book weaves a rekindled love story against a fascinating medieval backdrop. Former lovers Valda and Halfdan sail all the way down to Miklagard (better known as Constantinople, now Istanbul) and I loved seeing their growing closeness  as the voyage goes on.

While the challenges of the past and Halfdan's own father hamper them, their own stubborn pride is also to blame - particularly Halfden! Valda makes some very good points about being a woman in a man's world, but Halfden is so sure that his crew are different, he doesn't really acknowledge the truth of her struggles. He's also promised himself into marriage alliance on their return and that really isn't terribly conducive to a relationship, no matter how he tries to spin it.

I know very little about Vikings that doesn't come from Horrible Histories and that never covered their trading trips down south, but I found the historical context added a beautiful richness. There was even an added dimension of the rise of Christianity versus local pagan religions and how that differed from place to place - not particularly plot-relevant, but it added depth without bulking the word count.

If devoted but hard-headed idiots in love (incredibly competent people rendered nonsensical by feelings they refuse to admit to) during an interesting time period sounds like your jam, pick up this book!
