Blog Tour: Scotsman in the Stacks by Alana Oxford

Paige wants two things: to land a full time librarian job and find the man of her dreams. On the cusp of thirty, she finds herself suddenly single and working part-time in a Michigan library. A handsome patron with a delicious accent appears at the reference desk, inadvertently sparking an idea that might help her land the promotion she so desperately needs. But that's not the only thing he sparks.

James is in town from Glasgow, Scotland, on a summer artist residency. Luckily, the trip got him away from the pressure he feels to take over his uncle's river tour business. He only wanted to clear his head and make his art in peace, but he wasn't counting on finding an attractive librarian to fill his days.

With only eight weeks before James goes home to Scotland, Paige knows she should protect her heart. After all, she already wasted years with her commitmentphobe ex. But the more she gets to know James, the less she can stick to her plan to just be friends. Is she just wasting her time again, or can they bridge the ocean between them to find a happily ever after of their own?

Review

I knew this was going to be a good read when Paige divulged one of librarians' deepest secrets: they don't care about due dates because their own accounts don't accrue late fees! It was this gem of knowledge (that I can 100% verify through my own experience) that exemplifies the authenticity that underlies this modern fairytale. I might not be the biggest fan of twenty-nine being treated as practically on the shelf, but it's fleeting, as the rest of this book is a wonderful dream of getting swept away by a handsome stranger, of summer romances and weekend roadtrips, of finding someone whose support encourages the best version of you, and with little details to give the entire story the ring of truth.

I loved Paige. Her knowledge of romance novels got a little meta, but it's about par for the course when sitting in the head of a librarian! Paige's character arc is subtle but empowering - she starts the novel sure of what she wants but almost unwilling to even voice it, but thanks to James she takes the initiative to take steps to where she wants to be. James is a little more enigmatic as we see him only through Paige's eyes, but we're given enough of his story to understand his background and the growth that Paige inspires. I'm glad the novel was written this way, as I feel James' story is more common in novels and thus easy to imagine.

Overall, this was an enjoyable closed-door romance combining two of my favourite things: libraries and trips away! Best enjoyed in a library (where else?) or surrounded by books, this engaging romance is the perfect blend of fantasy anchored by doses of wisdom and a deep love of Michigan.
