Review
Life has not been kind to Garrick MacLean since he honourably proposed marriage to Lady Moira Fraser née Stewart and she turned him down because he was in love with her younger sister Brenna. Years later, loss has shattered him and turned him bitter and overbearing. He's returning north to lick his wounds, not to save the woman he almost married from her burnt out carriage.
Brenna is grateful for his aid in saving her life, but quite rightly calls him out on his new (and much unimproved) attitude. She's been papering over her heartbreak since Garrick was presumed dead and I loved seeing her realise her own worth. Garrick, meanwhile, is irritated to find that he still has feelings. He's helping Brenna out of a sense of duty, and not because he's still in love with her. Of course. I wanted him to buck out of his self-loathing a little earlier and give a little more grovel, but he gets there in the end.
This is an excellently written novel that really does make you hate the English of the time. The complex clan alliances are sketched in enough detail to give realism without being confusing, and it was fabulous to see Moira and Rory again. There's a mystery to solve and it all comes to a heady climax in the historical version of a car chase!
Best enjoyed with your feet planted firmly on the ground, this Scottish historical romance has just a hint of romantic suspense about it.
