Review: To Ride a Rising Storm by Moniquill Blackgoose

I requested an advanced copy of this book immediately after devouring the first one and let me tell you, I was not disappointed.

We pick up exactly where we left off, at the end of Anequs’ first year at the academy, and follow her and her growing crowd of friends and allies as the ripples of her presence continue to spread and tensions rise.

What I liked:
- more in-story lore from a wide range of narrators
- a deeper dive into skiltkrafting (chemistry), erelore (history), and mapcrafting (geography), all of which bring richness to the world and often have plot significance
- new students bringing additional perspectives to this boldly anticolonial story
- a bit of romance (no spoilers, but it’s all delightfully in character)
- a captivating story with a heroine I enjoy spending time with

What I didn’t like:
- the map at the front is very little and I can’t expand it on my reader
- there is something especially cruel about encountering a cliff hanger when reading an ARC

Basically, if you enjoyed To Shape A Dragon’s Breath, this is the same but has More. I couldn’t put this down, much to the detriment of my sleep schedule, and I await the next book with delight.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book via NetGalley, all opinions (and any typos, as I don’t use AI) are my own
