Review

This is a charming, gentle story about life, loss, and love, filled with house parties and extended rides through the countryside. It's a story where the happy ending is less important than the path to get there.

It was interesting to see Prudence discover her place in the world after seemingly losing the one place she thought would always be hers. Like an unfolding puzzle box, her life trips from one relative to another as she realises she's not as alone as she thought. Jack's struggle with returning from the war is all too common and his efforts to combat boredom while helping others were admirable. Their love blooms slowly but it is clear that its roots are buried deep.

There are many supporting characters - I adored Pru's aunt Becky - and the dialogue takes a while to get into but both deepen the atmosphere and add colour to a rich picture. Pick up this book, sit back, and rusticate with Pru and Jack for a while.

Natalie’s passion for reading became a compulsion to write when she attended a ten-week course in creative writing some sixteen or so years ago. She takes delight in creating short stories of which more than forty have been published, but it was her lifelong love of Regency romance that led her to turn from contemporary romantic fiction to try her hand at her favourite genre. Raised on a diet of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, she is never happier than when immersed in an age of etiquette and manners, fashion and intrigue, all combined into a romping good tale. She lives on the London/Kent border, close to the capital’s plethora of museums and galleries which she uses for research as well as pleasure. A perfect day though is when she heads out of town to enjoy lunch by a pub on the river, any river, in company with her husband and friends.
